Raise Awareness of LGBTQ+ Discrimination - IDAHOBiT project

iLearn for IDAHOBiT - May 17 2021

For IDAHOBit - May 17th 2021, the iLearn department is running a series of projects where students can both develop their independent learning skills and raise awareness about discrimination experienced by LGBTQ+ people.

The International Day Against Homophoboa, Biphobia and Transphobia was created in 2004 to draw attention to the violence and discrimination experienced by lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, intersex people and all other people with diverse sexual orientations, gender identities or expression and sex characteristics.

The date of May 17th was chosen to commemorate the World Health Organization's decision in 1990 to declassify homosexuality as a mental disorder. May 17 is now celebrated in more than 130 countries, including 37 where same-sex acts are illegal. Thousands of projects and events take place, big and small, across the globe.

The Projects

  • Make display posters for the Leeds City College LRCs including: information about IDAHOBiT, detailing laws about LGBTQ+ people across the globe, highlighting LGBTQ+ icons
  • Use Google Sites to make a microsite about the history of IDAHOBiT and LGBTQ+ Activism
  • Contribute to a collective e-zine about the history of IDAHOBiT and LGBTQ+ Activism. Other contributions could be personal stories, interviews, book reviews, tv or film reviews.
